A Kansas City
area man and his wife have apparently been denied the right to adopt
a relative's child, because he is too fat! Too fat and "might"
develop health issues.
According to
My Fox Kansas City, (July 25, 2007), "Gary and Cynthia
Stocklaufer said they were asked to adopt a relative's son and never
expected the justice system to weigh in on Gary's size.
"I adore him,
I love him, he's everything," Cynthia said about three-month old
Max, the biological son of Gary's cousin.
Gary said his
relative asked him and his wife Cynthia to raise the boy because she
couldn't.
"We wanted to
do it legally and we wanted to get some type of custody so we could
get him on our insurance," Cynthia said.'
The story goes
on to say, "Cheri Simpkins, the baby's court appointed guardian said
weight was not the only concern in this case. While Simpkins said
she can't talk specifics, she went on to say "there was concern that
Gary may develop diabetes or sleep apnea because of his size."
"Might"
develop diabetes or sleep apnea? Sounds more like what has developed
is bias at the hands of those within the system.
What next?
Will we refuse to allow ugly people to adopt children because their
looks might scare the kids and leave them scarred for life? Of
course, who determines ugly? (Are guidelines being created for all
but those who are part of the system?) Or maybe the system will want
all parents to be blondes that fall within a certain height and
weight range? Can't forget the IQ. What will be the minimum
allowable? What professions are acceptable? Will all prospective
parents have to be liberal-minded in their attitudes towards raising
children? Just what bias requirements will the perspective parents
have to live up to before having a chance to adopt?
"Might"
develop diabetes or sleep apnea? What about some of the other "mights"?
Might get hit
by a car walking across the street. Might get into an auto accident
on the way to or from work. Might slip in the tub.
Just as
possible, Gary Stocklaufer might live a full and healthy life (in
spite of his weight), loving his children with every ounce of his
being and giving them the best start in life that a child could wish
for.
Yes, that is
just as possible and should be considered so.
Gary
Stocklaufer is too fat to be a parent? Looks more like the court
system that decided that is too bias to sit in judgment. Maybe they
should be removed from the case, rather than the child being removed
from Gary and his wife. Yes, that might just be where the true
justice rests!
