As of the 10:00 pm Mountain update from the South Dakota Secretary of State's website, the Union County Hyperion refinery vote is 52.68% for and 47.32% against, with 12 of 13 precincts reporting. Unless things tilt radically in that last precinct, it looks like Union County is going to vote for the Hyperion refinery.
If the refinery plans go forward and it's built, this would be the first new refinery built in the United States in about 30 years--something we desperately need. We have increased efficiencies in our existing refineries in the last 30 years to get more bang for the buck, but we've closed down several of the refineries that were open 30 years ago. Refining capacity is near 100%.
Environmentalists in Union County--with help from an environmentalist group from California--worked hard against this project, but hopefully this will be another hurdle cleared.
America desperately needs to start drilling for new domestic oil, and build more refineries to prepare oil for use in our vehicles.
It looks like the people of Union County have chosen the nation's energy needs over environmental extremism.
