KELO reports that while the official labs to be set up in the old Homestake Gold Mine at Lead are still in the future, experiments are already underway there:
The early tests are focusing on geology, geological engineering and underground hydrology.
Other scientists are studying microbes and bacteria that inhabit the top layer of the Earth's crust and could have applications in the study of other planets -- such as where life on Mars is likely to be found.
