I wouldn't have thought it possible, but apparently we have at least one person in South Dakota who is (a) to the Left of Barack Obama and (b) more invested in defeat in Iraq than Obama has been.
Publius at SouthDakotaMac states today that Sarah Palin "gaffes on Iraq:"
Palin said the United States had achieved “victory” in Iraq. Read it here. Palin’s stunning ignorance is profound, as is seen in the Couric interview and from Kurtz’ analysis piece here. Here’s a sample of the Palin blather, lifted from Kurtz’ article in the Washington Post:
"Things like the terrain even in Afghanistan and that border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where, you know, we believe that -- Bin Laden is -- is hiding out right now and . . . and is still such a leader of this terrorist movement. There . . . there are many more challenges there. So, again, I believe that . . . a surge in Afghanistan also will lead us to victory there as it has proven to have done in Iraq. And as I say, Katie, that we cannot afford to retreat, to withdraw in Iraq."
Publius must have missed the DNC memo allowing liberal operatives to acknowledge success in Iraq, because even Barack Obama got it:
“I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated,” Obama said while refusing to retract his initial opposition to the surge. “I’ve already said it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.”
Sounds like a pretty victorious pronouncement to me.
We still have troops in Korea after 50 years; I guess we're in a losing quagmire there, too.
I guess some folks just won't be happy unless America loses...and as long as somebody else is happy.

I spoke with a Marine Gunnery Sgt. this past weekend just returned from his third tour in Iraq. Each was served in the Fallujaa/Ramadi region so he has seen the changes from a war-torn hotbed of insurgents in 2004 until today. He remarked that the area is so secure that there isn't much to do except talk with the people in the streets, drink sweet tea and break up occasional fights among some boys arguing over a soccer game. What were once bombed out neighborhoods and abandoned shops are now bustling with commerce, laughing children and smiling appreciative residents. Anyone who thinks that we have not achieved victory over terrorists in Iraq are simply deluded. Last month there were more violent deaths in Chicago than in the entire country of Iraq. Perhaps we should be talking about a deadline for getting out of Chicago.
Actually, I have to agree with SouthDakotaMac and he does present a very good argument about Sarah Palin. The woman cannot provide specifics, but, from what I've viewed, she's great at general talking points and that is about it. To lambast another South Dakota blog over this and accuse them of unpatriotism shows how out of touch your blog really is and it also shows me that you take these matters very personally and come across as petty and vindictive. We do need to get Osama and his masterminds in Pakistan, because I've said for years that that is where the next attack is going to be planned from and right now they are holded up in a "safe haven" somewhere in Waziristan. Now, before you go ahead and judge me (because you seem to be so good at quickly judging other people and frankly, you need to read your Bible more) I am in the military and have served overseas. So, please, save me the line on your patriotism and the urgent need you have to judge others' patriotism by your standards until you have served in uniform and if you have served in uniform, may I suggest you take a more professional tone because you are not bringing honor to the uniform with this kind of attitude.
Good day and God Bless...
I see no lack of specifics whatsoever from Governor Palin.
Apparently you are a Koolaid-drinking Leftist if you think Dakota Voice is out of touch and SouthDakotaMac is an example of "in touch." SouthDakotaMac is definitely "in touch"--in touch with some very bad stuff.
I don't think anyone is saying that we shouldn't continue to pursue Osama bin Laden...but I don't think anyone who has a clue what they're talking about thinks our operations in Iraq have detracted from that.
And yes, I served 10 years in uniform with several of that overseas, so I have some idea of what I'm talking about.
The kind of professionals I served with loved their country, put it first, refused to bad-mouth and malign it at every turn as the Left does today, and would not harbor the defeatist drivel of the type that comes from SouthDakotaMac and other ultra-left blogs.
That kind of garbage is aid and comfort to the enemy, and we wouldn't have tolerated it for a minute.
That's the kind of professionalism and dedication to country that I had and that those I served with had.
Perhaps you Leftists ought to think about the encouragement you're giving to the enemy when you start this kind of trash talk.
P.S. I seem to have touched a Lefty nerve there, Anonymous. You wouldn't happen to go by Publius elsewhere, would you?
Bob,
You lost the argument along time ago. Again, you provide no specifics, much like Palin, but, you are good at calling people names and hurling personal insults. You keep throwing that "Kool Aid Drinking Liberal" line around and frankly who cares? You obviously have not served in the military, but, I can tell you this and that is military do not act like you do. Professional military people serve their nation to defend the people living in it and they don't go around insulting those people. We are in the military to fight for freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution and that includes freedom of speech. From what I've read of your ramblings, you have no tolerance for other views, hurl personal insults at will, and don't care to talk about the real issues. It is like you would be more apt to serve in a military that supports a dictator and a "one world view" state. As an Independent, (you were quick to judge once again)I'm going to continue to support those people who are genuinelly concerned and want to solve the real problems in our society. I sure don't seek your advice as a veteran on these matters because I happy you are no longer in my military. Unlike you, I will continue to proudly serve my nation in uniform. If you are going to respond, than respond professionally, because I'm not interested in your personal insults and ramblings. Enough said,
Good day and God Bless you.
Uh oh I'm just waiting for Bob's response to this!
I "obviously have not served in the military" huh? Do you think this is from a costume party: http://www.dakotavoice.com/2007/04/air-force-backing-army-on-ground-in.html
You claim the people in the military today "do not act like [I] do" and will tolerate a load of defeatist drivel that encourages our enemies?
Our nation is truly in a pathetic state if you are correct and our military is emphasizing our own shortcomings, embracing defeat and encouraging our enemy to resist. Your attitude makes me seriously doubt your claim about being in the service; no one--not even the few liberals--I knew in the service had such a poor attitude.
But I don't believe our military folks have gone that way, not for a second. There is no way our military could have turned into the band of crybabies and defeatists you portray in the 13 years since I served. You insult the obvious patriotism and bravery of those who do serve today and who continually show their determination and dedication.
Why don't you slink back into whatever anti-American Leftist hole you came from. Cheering for the enemy. That's pathetic.
P.S. Are you Publius? You sure sound like him, and seem pretty partial to his defeatist drivel.
