There was light posting today, obviously, but it was for a good reason.
My 11-year-old daughter Karissa competed in the 2008 Martial Arts Championship here in Rapid City today. There were many students competing from many forms of martial arts (Karissa is studying Jukite Ju-Jitsu, has earned her orange belt and is getting close to green belt), with some coming from at least as far away as Sioux Falls and over into Wyoming. It was an all-day thing and we didn't get out of there until after 7:00 pm tonight.
This was Karissa's first time competing in a tournament and she did pretty good. She's normally more aggressive when sparring in her own dojo (she rarely loses a match), but I think the new environment and going up against different arts (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and some others) threw her a little.
Still, she did pretty well in sparring and got a 3rd Place trophy for girls beginner grappling.

Congratulations to Karissa!
I took up taekwondo at age 40 and loved it. I made it to blue belt but had to give it up after:
Getting kicked in the stomach in sparring under my protector and having hernia surgery. Cost: $5K plus.
Severely straning my MCL and ACL on my left knee when I landed sideways on a running side kick. Cost: $3K plus.
I loved it but my wife and my growing medical bills convinced me that perhaps I was better off as a couch potato.
My daughter also did TKD with me. She was quite good and had a much better knack for it than I did. It is great for discipline, confidence, and being in good shape. Maybe Karissa will stick with it to her blackbelt, which is a great accomplishment. My daughter didn't quite make it that far but she really enjoyed it.
I wish Karissa good luck and good health. You must be very proud of her!

As much as she loves Ju-Jitsu, I think it's likely we'll see her achieve black belt before she heads off to college. Which will make her old man rest much easier. :-)
