Thank You Ms. Miers! President Bush, Please Act Quickly to Appoint a Justice Conservatives Can Support

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Just hours after Operation Rescue released its plans to actively oppose Harriet Miers nomination to the Supreme Court, she officially withdrew her name from consideration. In her withdrawal letter to the President George W. Bush, Miers used the same language found in Operation Rescue’s press releases, saying she was withdrawing "in the best interest of the country."

"Miers actions today are to be commended. Her withdrawal spares the nation a contentious confirmation battle that would likely have ended in her rejection by the Senate," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

"We would like to express our thankfulness to Ms. Miers for withdrawing," said Newman. "OR has focused the debate and criticism of the Miers nomination on her experience, qualifications and judicial philosophy all the while praising her as a pro-life evangelical. We will be praying for Ms. Miers and her continued work in the White House."

"Now is time for the President to make good on his promise to appoint a Justice in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. Operation Rescue calls upon President Bush to appoint a strong, well-qualified Constitutional Constructionist who will faithfully reform the court from it’s left-leaning, socially activist role to one more faithful to the Constitution," said Newman. "We need a person with a known judicial philosophy that all conservatives can unite behind. Only then can the administration begin to heal the rift created by the unfortunate Miers debacle."
