Danforth Wrong on Evangelical Influence in GOP WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), president of the National Clergy Council in Washington, DC, and a board member of the Evangelical Church Alliance, today took issue with Episcopal priest and former senator John Danforth who, according to the Associated Press, recently told students at the Bill Clinton School of Public Service in Arkansas that the political influence of Evangelicals is hurting the Republican Party and dividing the country. "Sen. Danforth couldn't be more wrong," said Reverend Schenck. "It was when Evangelicals were welcomed into the Republican Party that the GOP began growing in popularity and winning elections. Sen. Danforth is stuck in a time warp. He needs to take a look around and see how conservative the culture has grown over the last twenty years and how candidates win when they run on morally conservative platforms. If Evangelicals have had any influence in the party and in the country, it's been a winning influence for both." Reverend Schenck invited Reverend Danforth to discuss the matter further with him at a mutually convenient time and place.
