(10/31/2005 Conservative Clergy Heartened by Alito Pick WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK) of the National Clergy Council, representing more than 5000 church leaders of Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox and Protestant traditions together with over 31,000 lay associates in all 50 states, released this statement today regarding the nomination of Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court: "We are initially heartened by the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. From what we know, Judge Alito has a proven track record of respect for the original intent of the framers of the constitution when it comes to the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage, and the public acknowledgment of God. We are calling on Christian people of every tradition to pray for Judge Alito and the members of the US Senate as the confirmation process begins, and for the future of the Supreme Court." Reverend Schenck will lead a delegation of clergy in meeting with members of the US Senate Judiciary Committee this week to discuss concerns about the nominee and the confirmation process.
