Majority of
American Women Say Alito’s Position on Abortion is Irrelevant WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- The single most asked question during Judge Samuel Alito’s first two days of confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week was about abortion. In an attempt to portray Alito as “out of the mainstream,” Senators Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Chuck Schumer (D- NY), Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) drilled him over and over again about his personal views on abortion and how he might rule in cases involving Roe v Wade. But a poll sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony List, taken during the hearings, shows the strategy of the left completely failed. The poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies on Jan. 10-12, had a sample of 800 likely voters and a 3.46 margin of error. Seventy percent of women and 71 percent of men said Judge Alito should NOT be disqualified from serving on the U.S. Supreme Court if he is pro-life on abortion. Sixty-six percent of women and 70 percent of men said a well-qualified nominee should NOT be disqualified from serving on the U.S. Supreme Court if they are pro-life on abortion. And what about among pro-choicers? Of those sampled in the poll, 28 percent identified themselves as pro-life and 34 percent identified themselves as pro-choice. Among those that were pro-choice, 56 percent said Alito’s position on abortion should not disqualify him from serving on the U.S. Supreme Court. “Our poll clearly shows that the majority of Americans, whether they are women or men, pro-life or pro-choice, republican or democrat, are regular church attenders or almost never go, do not believe a Supreme Court nominee should be disqualified if they are pro-life,” said SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The majority of Americans, including American women, want judges to enforce laws passed by the people and their elected representatives. They don’t want judges making up laws from the bench.” Who were the poll respondents? Some interesting numbers below: 41% Republicans 43% Democrats 36% Frequently attend church 21% Occasionally attend church 41% Rare/Never attend church For details of this poll and others related to abortion, go to www.sba- list.org The Susan B. Anthony List is a 501 (c)(4) not-for- profit membership organization with a connected political action committee, the SBA List Candidate Fund. The Susan B. Anthony List has over 140,000 members residing in all 50 states.
