NPLAC: Supreme Court Fails to Uphold Human Rights in Oregon Decision WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The National Pro-Life Action Center (NPLAC)—the uncompromising voice of pro-life America on Capitol Hill—is appalled by the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision affirming Oregon’s 1997 Death with Dignity Act. NPLAC calls upon the United States Congress to enact legislation that would abolish this illicit practice and restore a respect for all innocent human life. “There is no dignity or constitutionality to be found in a law that preys on the infirmed and transforms doctors from caregivers into decriminalized murderers. At the heart of this debate, as is the case with virtually all of the life issues, is this question: Do we as a people have the right to legalize murder? The answer is a simple, unequivocal, No.” stated Stephen G. Peroutka, NPLAC chairman and a Maryland attorney. “Oregon’s law has nothing to do with ending the suffering of the infirmed, but has everything to do with the culture of death seeking to legitimize and legalize euthanasia. The most basic human right is life itself; without life, you can enjoy no other right.” “This decision reminds me of the axiom, ‘Those who are ignorant of history are bound to repeat it.’ On the eve of the 33rd anniversary of the deplorable Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions—which are responsible for the loss of no less than 45 million children’s lives—the Supreme Court has once again demonstrated an utter disdain for the intrinsic dignity and sanctity of human life,” said Paul Chaim Schenck, director of NPLAC. “The argument that physician- assisted suicide is compassionate is not only morally reprehensible, but illogical and unnecessary. We can treat pain without killing the patient. A doctor given the license to intentionally prescribe a lethal dose of medication is gross negligence—nothing more.” “Modern medicine—particularly palliative care—can guarantee that a patient need not suffer unbearable pain as they prepare themselves for death,” Peroutka stated. “Pro-death proponents hide behind the altruistic language of choice and compassion. But make no mistake, there is an agenda at work that is driven, among other things, by greed and narcissism.”
