Christian Leaders Seek Face to Face Meeting with Attorney General Gonzales in Response to Nine Church Burnings in Five Days in Alabama

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Christian Defense Coalition, the National Clergy Council and the Christian Coalition of Alabama want assurances from General Gonzales that every possible federal resource is being used to apprehend those involved in theses church attacks.

Leaders will hold a news conference outside the Department of Justice on Wednesday, February 8th, at 11:00 A.M. The news conference will be on the Pennsylvania Ave. sidewalk.

After the news conference, the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney and the Rev. Rob Schenck will hand deliver a letter to the Attorney General's office. They will include with that letter a small piece of Rehobeth Baptist Church which was burned to the ground last Friday.

Copies of the letter will be made available to the press.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, comments, "With nine church burnings in five days, it is critical that the Christian community along with the entire public have assurances that the federal government is leaving no stone unturned in their effort to apprehend those involved in these despicable acts of hate against places of worship. It must be constantly stressed an attack on a church building is an attack against religious expression and the very fabric of our American way of life."

Rev. Rob Schenck, President of the National Clergy Council, "Attacks on a house of worship should be responded to at the highest levels of government. Churches are redemptive communities that reflect the deepest beliefs and most sincere actions of the American people. Churches are also virtually defenseless. We urge the White House and the Department of Justice to quickly and publicly denounce these burnings and pledge to bring the perpetrators to justice. Our hearts are with the pastors and people of the affected congregations and we pray for their enemies that they may find salvation in Christ."
