61,061 Protest 'Brokeback Mountain' Oscar Nominations
a “twisted, laughable, frustrating, plotless and boring piece of homosexual, neo-Marxist propaganda.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fl., Mar. 2 -- More than 61,000 Americans joined Dr. Gary Cass today in a letter of outrage protesting the eight Oscar nominations for Brokeback Mountain, a film that movie critic Ted Baehr has called a “twisted, laughable, frustrating, plotless and boring piece of homosexual, neo-Marxist propaganda.”

“As a movie-goer, I am deeply outraged over the Academy’s nomination of Brokeback Mountain for best picture,” wrote Cass, Executive Director of the Center for Reclaiming America for Christ, in a letter to Sid Ganis, President of the Academy. The letter, along with the names of the 61,061 cosigners, will arrive tomorrow, Friday, March 3, just before the 78th annual Academy Awards ceremony, Sunday, March 5.

Cass originally drafted a quick personal protest letter to the Academy, “but then I got to thinking: ‘How many other Christians are sick and tired of Hollywood pushing its agenda on our nation?’” he said. So he decided to invite the Center for Reclaiming America’s online grassroots network to join him in the protest.

“We can't give Hollywood a free pass as it pushes the homosexual agenda on our nation, while casting Christian-themed films aside,” he said.

In his letter, Cass wrote that “The Academy’s nomination of this film has little to do with honoring great moviemaking. Instead, it is just a high-profile attempt to mainstream the homosexual agenda. That this movie uses the classic symbol of the American male -- the cowboy -- to promote this agenda is offensive to the vast majority of Americans.”

Cass noted that the Academy gave just three nominations—for technical, not artistic, achievement (makeup, sound mixing, and visual effects)—to the smash hit Chronicles of Narnia, while bestowing eight nominations on Brokeback Mountain. “Your agenda is even more obvious,” Cass wrote Ganis, “when considering that movies like The Chronicles of Narnia, that have themes that resonate with most Americans, are virtually ignored by the Academy.”

“Again, I am deeply troubled that you would allow the Academy to be tarnished in such a way,” wrote Cass, “and would hope that in the future you would consider honoring those movies that are truly worthy of honoring.”
