Soybean and Pork Producers Work Together on Billboard Campaign
South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council

(Sioux Falls, SD) – April 17, 2006 - Motorists around the Sioux Falls metro area may notice some eye-catching billboards located on I-29 north of Sioux Falls and the I-29 and I-90 interchange. The billboards show the importance the pork industry has to the state’s soybean producers.

South Dakota Soybean Research & Promotion Council (SDSRPC) director Lewis Bainbridge of Ethan, SD, said, “Soybean meal is particularly efficient in the production of U.S. pork. Every pound of pork exported overseas represents the utilization of 1.5 pounds of soybeans. In South Dakota, hog producers raise over 2.3 million hogs annually consuming more than 6.5 million bushels of soybeans. Hogs add over $500 million each year to the state’s economy.”

The project entitled, Soybean and Pork Producers Impact South Dakota’s Economy is a joint effort of the SDSRPC, South Dakota Pork Producers Council (SDPPC) and the United Soybean Board (USB). Funding for the project was made possible by a grant from the USB’s Domestic Marketing Committee to the SDSRPC.

USB is made up of 64 farmer-directors who oversee the investments of the soybean checkoff on behalf of all U.S. soybean farmers. Checkoff funds are invested in the areas of animal utilization, human utilization, industrial utilization, industry relations, market access and supply.

Both SDSRPC and SDPPC represent soybean and pork producers, respectively, through the commodity's checkoff programs. Each checkoff is designed to promote the increased use of soybeans and pork through education, promotion and research programs.
