Carlson Debates Same-Sex Marriage at UCLA Law School LOS ANGELES, April 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Dr. Allan Carlson, president of the Howard Center for Family, Religion and Society and founder of the World Congress of families, will take part in a multi-scholar debate on extending marriage and adoption to same-sex couples at the UCLA School of Law today. The five debates are open to the public and continue through 1:30pm Saturday. Carlson will be debating changes in marriage and the family in Scandinavia and Western Europe with Lee Badgett, visiting professor at The Williams Institute. In his prepared remarks, Carlson demonstrates that, “The deliberate political elimination of marriage as a meaningful legal and social institution was far advanced in Sweden before same sex marriage even became an issue.” Carlson observes, “Marriage and family law exists to encourage, sustain and protect this unique institution. Marriage is for the propagation of children and for their conservation through nurture, education and protection . . . As with the elimination of ‘fault’ from divorce proceedings or like the deliberate dismantling of economic bonds between husband and wife, the introduction of registered partnerships and/or same sex marriage further confuses and diminishes a vital human institution . . .” For a full list of speakers and debate topics, go to www.law.ucla.edu . Dr. Carlson has been a family scholar for almost three decades. He received a Ph.D. in Modern European History from Ohio State University in 1978. He is also the author of many books, including “Fractured Generations: Crafting Family Policy for the 21st Century,” “The American Way: Family and Community In the Shaping of the American Identity” and “Family Questions: Reflections on the American Social Crisis.” The Washington Post, Weekly Standard, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and numerous other publications have featured his writings. He has also appeared on PBS News Hour, NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered, Voice of America, ABC, CBS, and NBC News, MSNBC, CNN, and C-SPAN.
