Focus Action Urges Support for Broadcast Indecency Bill
American public demands tougher penalties for indecent programming

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 24 /Christian Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family Action Senior Analyst for Media and Sexuality Daniel Weiss is available to comment on the U.S. Senate's lack of action on bills to increase fines on broadcast indecency. Following a federal lawsuit filed by major broadcasters insisting they have they have the right to use the "f-word" and the "s-word," Focus Action is urging concerned citizens to flood the Senate with calls in support of tougher penalties for indecent programming.

"It's been clear for too long now that the American public is demanding penalties for decency violations that aren't mere slaps on the wrist," Weiss said. "Unfortunately, Senate leadership seems unwilling to acknowledge that fact and has held hostage two good bills that would substantially increase fines for broadcasters who continue to flout the law.

"While Americans have been complaining about the offensive nature of so many programs, Sens. Bill Frist and Ted Stevens have been blocking the Upton and Brownback bills (H.R. 310 and S. 193) to increase fines to reasonable levels – claiming that there are not enough votes to approve them. What they're conveniently ignoring is that a similar bill passed the Senate in 2004 by a vote of 99-1.

"It's past time for Sens. Frist and Stevens to exercise leadership and bring these bills to the Senate floor for a vote. We are asking every concerned citizen to call their senators this week and urge them to support the broadcast-indecency legislation."
