HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt Recognizes Vivian Berryhill for Dedication to Volunteer Service MEMPHIS, Tenn., April 25 /Christian Newswire/ -- The National Coalition of Pastors’ Spouses (NCPS) commends President George Bush in recognizing NCPS’ founder and president, Vivian Berryhill, with the prestigious Presidential Service Award. During an award presentation held April 24, in Memphis, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services recognized Mrs. Berryhill’s more than 5,300 volunteer hours, both nationally and internationally, to raise awareness through health education. NCPS, working through churches and religious institutions, empowers women to take control of their health and the health of their families. “I appreciate Secretary Leavitt for the presentation of this honor. On behalf of all pastors’ spouses who are on the front lines addressing health and social ills that disproportionately impact communities of color, I humbly accept this. "We are confident that using churches as 'health hubs,' pastors spouses can effectively reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, heart disease, teen pregnancy, and diabetes in our communities. The efforts put forth today by those in our vast network of spouses will affect generations for years to come,” Mrs. Berryhill said. NCPS has collaborated with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy to publish Faith Matters: How African American Faith Communities Can Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy; and the U.S. Department of HHS to publish HIV/AIDS: A Manual for Faith Communities. NCPS is currently working with Novo Nordisk, Inc. to draft a national diabetes curriculum, “Faith In Action: Exposing the Debilitator––Diabetes”, to be unveiled nationally in November 2006. The National Coalition of Pastors’ Spouses is a nonprofit, nonpartisan multidenominational network of 2500+ clergy spouses committed to raising awareness and addressing health disparities across this nation.
