CWA Cheers Defeat of .XXX Domain WASHINGTON, May 11 /Christian Newswire/ -- Concerned Women for America applauds the vote by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) rejecting a special .xxx domain for pornography on the World Wide Web. The 9-5 decision by the private agency that oversees Internet operation reverses its preliminary approval last June of a domain name for voluntary use by the adult entertainment industry. “This vote proves the power of regular folks when they raise their voices against the power-brokers who think they can run the universe without opposition,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s chief counsel. “This is a win against a multi-million dollar, six-year effort on behalf of the porn industry.” LaRue met with officials at the Department of Commerce last year to express vigorous opposition to the porn domain. After thousands of e-mails were sent to the DOC, the Bush administration then announced its opposition to the domain. Letters of opposition were also sent to Paul Twomey, CEO of ICANN. “We objected for many reasons but the most obvious was that porn sites would be free to keep all of their current domains, such as .com, and add the .xxx domain. Anybody who thinks that would help parents protect kids from porn on the Internet has crashed in the cranium,” LaRue added. Twomey told media that the ICANN board, “was certainly very conscious of (the controversy) ... but the heart of the decision today was not driven by a political consideration.” “Now that ICANN has had the good sense to listen to the American people, those in Congress who are proposing legislation to create a porn domain need to take a virtual reality check,” LaRue concluded. Concerned Women for America (CWA) is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.
