Salem Publishing to Acquire Xulon Press; Print-on-Demand Digital Publisher Targets Christian Authors

NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 17 /Christian Newswire/ -- Salem Publishing, a division of Salem Communications (Nasdaq:SALM), announced today it has agreed to acquire Xulon Press, a premier on-demand digital publisher of books targeting the Christian audience. Xulon President and CEO, Tom Freiling, will join Salem Publishing as general manager of Xulon Press.

Jim Cumbee, president of Non-Broadcast Media for Salem Communications, said: "This acquisition is an opportunity for Salem to diversify our core radio, Internet and magazine platform, yet continue to serve our niche -- the audience interested in Christian, family and values content. Xulon has built a successful print-on-demand (POD), digital-based business that targets Christian writers who want to be published. Since its inception in 1999, Xulon's management team has demonstrated a track record of profitable growth. By providing Xulon the ability to promote its product through our radio, Internet and print platforms, we expect to achieve new levels of success."

Freiling said: "The goal of Xulon Press is to serve Christian authors who have a message they want to share. We already have served more than 2,600 authors and sold one million books, but that is just the start. By combining the sophisticated resources we have built with the significant reach of Salem Communications; it's exciting to think about how many more Christian authors we can serve in the future."

Print-on-demand employs digital technology whereby books are stored electronically and printed only as they are ordered. POD reduces the need for large inventory and warehousing and allows authors the opportunity to publish a work in minutes.

Salem Publishing, based in Nashville, publishes CCM Magazine(R), Homecoming(R) The Magazine, YouthWorker Journal(TM), Singing News(R) Magazine, FaithTalk(TM) and crosswalk.com The Magazine. Salem Communications (NASDAQ:SALM) is a leading U.S. radio broadcaster, Internet content provider and magazine publisher targeting audiences interested in Christian and family-themed content and conservative values. In addition to its radio properties, Salem owns Salem Radio Network(R), which syndicates talk, news and music programming to approximately 2,000 affiliates; Salem Radio Representatives(TM), a national radio advertising sales force; Salem Web Network(TM), an Internet provider of Christian content and online streaming; and Salem Publishing(TM), a publisher of Christian- themed magazines. Upon the close of all announced transactions, the company will own 104 radio stations, including 66 stations in 24 of the top 25 markets.
