Chaplain Faces Court-Martial for Praying in Jesus' Name

NEWS ADVISORY, May 22 /Christian Newswire/ -- Chaplain Lieutenant Gordon James Klingenschmitt has been formally served with court-martial papers for the "crime" of publicly praying in Jesus' name in uniform.

Klingenschmitt prayed in front of the White House on March 30th, for which he now stands charged due to an order from Navy Secretary Donald C. Winter who declared all non-chapel prayers in Jesus' name "illegal."

Janet L. Folger, President of Faith2Action said, "Navy Secretary Winter's order that chaplains must pray to a government-mandated nameless god, rather than in accordance with their religious beliefs, is tyranny."

"This illegal, unconstitutional action must be reversed by our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush, and the U.S. Senate by amending the Defense Authorization bill to include protection for Chaplains' religious freedom."

Folger added, "Do we really want to court-martial Chaplains for prayer in Jesus' name during time of war? This is America, not China or Saudi Arabia."
