Fire Thunder Fired: Tribe Burns Plans For Abortion Clinic

PINE RIDGE, South Dakota, May 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council voted yesterday to outlaw abortion on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and suspend tribal president Cecelia Fire Thunder until impeachment proceedings could be brought against her.

Fire Thunder made headlines when she vowed to open an abortion mill at Pine Ridge in defiance of the new state law passed earlier this year banning abortion. However, the tribal council decided otherwise and took action to bring tribal law into agreement with South Dakota state law.

“This is a loud and clear message to the abortion crowd that the people of South Dakota, no matter the race, creed, color, or heritage, overwhelmingly support the South Dakota legislature in banning abortions,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “We thank the Oglala tribe and applaud them for their courageous vote to protect the lives of the innocent.” The abortion ban has yet to take effect. Earlier this week, abortion supporters presented signatures to the state seeking a ballot initiative that would put the abortion ban to a vote.

“We believe yesterday’s actions by the Oglala people to ban abortion on their native soil is indicative of the support we believe the abortion ban enjoys in the state of South Dakota,” said Newman. “And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Pro-life sentiments are continuing to sweep across the nation and the state legislatures. The days of decriminalized abortion are numbered.”
