Louisiana Governor Blanco Signs Abortion Trigger Law Baton Rouge, LA - Jun 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Keeping her promise, Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed Louisiana’s abortion ban legislation into law on Saturday. Louisiana’s abortion ban is known as a “Trigger Law” and will only take effect if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade or the U.S. Constitution is amended to leave the legality of abortion up to individual states. When the law goes into effect, it will provide stiff penalties to any doctor who would commit abortions, including $100,000 fines and up to 10 years in jail. This legislation is similar to South Dakota’s abortion ban passed earlier this year, but differs in that South Dakota’s ban would be effective once challenges to the law are resolved. “This legislation really shows how important saving innocent lives is to the people of Louisiana,” said Operation Rescue Troy Newman. “These people have been through so much with the hurricane devastation of the past year, yet they are willing to look to the future to protect the innocent once individual states are given an opportunity to decided on abortion. We applaud their efforts and pray the day will come soon when their law may go into full effect.”
