Governor Rounds Issues Week of Prayer Proclamation

Proclaims week for South Dakota to pray for rain

PIERRE, S.D. –Gov. Mike Rounds invites South Dakotans to come together on Monday, July 24th through Sunday, July 30th for a week of prayer for rain.

“Current extreme drought conditions across a large portion of South Dakota have people asking what they can do to help,” said Gov. Rounds. “We are a strong people and all can provide help in many ways, whether actually fighting the fires, providing assistance to the crews, or joining together in the power of prayer.”

Many areas of South Dakota face the possibility of wildfire each day with the lack of moisture and high temperature conditions. Dry lightning adds to this danger, not only in the Black Hills forest area, but also on the dry prairie lands throughout central and western South Dakota. An emergency Executive Order has been issued by Gov. Rounds in an effort to make state resources available to any area needing immediate assistance.

The following is the text of the proclamation:

Executive Proclamation State of South Dakota Office of the Governor

Whereas, All citizens of South Dakota share a common interest in the well-being of our people; and,

Whereas, Many of our rural communities are heavily dependent upon agriculture to sustain their markets and local economies; and,

Whereas, Production agriculture is dependent upon sufficient moisture at critical times, including spring and summer rains; and,

Whereas, Many South Dakotans could face wildfire danger if moisture conditions do not improve in the next few weeks; and,

Whereas, It is appropriate to urge all citizens to join together to pray for rain in our great state of South Dakota:

Now, Therefore, I, M. Michael Rounds, Governor of the state of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim July 24-30, 2006, as

A WEEK TO PRAY FOR RAIN

in South Dakota.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the state of South Dakota, in Pierre, the Capital City, this Twenty-first Day of July in the Year of Our Lord, Two Thousand and Six.

M. Michael Rounds, Governor

Attest: Chris Nelson, Secretary of State
