South Dakota Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Public is invited, musical performances will accompany PIERRE, S.D. – The 2006 grand lighting ceremony will take place in the Capitol rotunda on Tuesday evening, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The South Dakota Tree was decorated by the South Dakota Quilters’ Guild. Twenty three quilting groups from across the state helped with decorations for the largest tree on display. The majestic South Dakota tree is a 31 foot Black Hills spruce that was donated by Rick and Carolea Smith of Watertown. The lighting ceremony will feature musical performances by Allison Mickelson Brooks of Pierre, Pierre Washington Elementary 4th & 5th grade chorus and the Yankton High School Mixed Quartet. Pre-event music begins at 6 p.m. with musical entertainment by Surprise Package and a piano performance by Dr. James Szana, all of Pierre. After the ceremony, kids of all ages can get their picture taken with Santa Claus in front of the South Dakota Tree in the rotunda; and refreshments, provided by Lynn’s Dakotamart, will be served on the first floor of the Capitol. The Capitol Christmas tree display is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from November 22 through December 25.
