The Missouri Association for Creation has an excellent summary of the truth of the Scopes trial and its participants and the Hollywood version depicted in "Inherit the Wind," linked here:

The truth is that the trial was fabricate and instigated by the ACLU in an attempt to test the Butler Act, which forbade the teaching of evolutionary theory as it pertains to man, but, more importantly, to discredit Christians and to portray us as intolerant, anti-intellectual bigots. It seems little has changed with the ACLU in the intervening years, save that they have added America and American values to their hit list.
